SUTHERLAND CHAIR was made for Collect 2020 : international art fair for design and craft.
We were invited to make new, museum quality, furniture for the Craft Scotland showcase presented at Collect 2020, in Somerset House.
The design was inspired by walking in the dramatic glaciated landscape of Sutherland plus a visit to the extensive behind the scenes collection at the Highland Folk Museum and the Sutherland vernacular chairs in particular. To read more about the inspiration behind the design please read blog post Collect 2020. Some of the making process can be seen below. The internal and external curves were steam-bent to minimise waste and maximise strength. The characterful oak cushion was hand-shaped.
The chair is made in Perthshire oak, with laburnum turned handles on the doors to the little cupboards which are ideal for a bottle, glass and book.
Oak and laburnum.
