South Mead “S” Bench
Commissioned by Southmead Community Trust to create a sculptural, yet functional artwork, that would unite the old and new estates by appealing to both sides of the community and provide a focal point to bring people together.
Sited in a central green space next to the shops, the Southmead “S” is inspired by the notion of a fence and the frequently seen graffitied “S” (for Southmead). The fence is symbolic of the meeting place between divergent perspectives (“sitting on the fence, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence”).
The “S” has a central gateway which flows into two curved seating areas and is constructed from vandal resistant scorched oak.
