All of our designs are by Angus Ross and are unique to us. Many designs are bespoke commissions and the starting point and nature of the project varies widely. For example we may be commissioned by a collector to create a memorial or heirloom object or asked by a private client to design a table for family gatherings or a chair for a specific function. Angus is also a public artist and is commissioned to design functional art for public places such as: a series of way making benches that provide a place to pause and rest (enriched with site specific poetry); or a shelter with seating for the elderly and confused when Angus designed to reassure, support and stimulate memory.
After a career designing mass produced products for British high street brands Angus finds it much more rewarding to be activly involved in the whole process from design, to hand-picking timber, to making a finished piece of furniture that will be loved and cherished for decades.
Bespoke designs start with a conversation whether an individual or commissioning team. Angus will explore who it is for, why it is being commisioned (the purpose and symbolism), what it is (the function and experience) and where it is going (the room or history and geography of the wider area). The conversation may start with an email, a visit to our studio or face to face meeting with Angus.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
When designing Angus draws on decades of experience and the creative spark or kernal or an idea may come from a shape seen in the architecture or landscape, or from exploring the function and experience. As this is mulled over layers are added with meaning, materials, methods of making, movement and finish. Ideas are developed with sketching and model making until a concept model is produced for the client. After discussion this is developed into the detailed drawings.
We also have standard ranges and limited editions available which may be customised.
